Fry’s New Digital Deli

Most of you know there’s a 25-aisle Disneyland on Tatum and Shea in Phoenix – it’s called Fry’s SuperBonanzaWonderland Marketplace, or something like that. If you’ve been inside, then you know it’s a whirlwind of incredible grocery shopping, a place where you can get patio furniture with your paté, a jet ski with your Jell-o, or just some strange tropical fruit no one else carries.

The place has literally been compared to Disneyland by the fellas that, well, actually run Disneyland. But there is one thing that Jon Flora, the President of Fry’s, doesn’t want to have in common with Walt’s world: lines. He tries to make sure his “guests” don’t stand in long delirious lines during their shopping playtime (at the deli counter anyway). So to answer the call, Fry’s has now installed digital kiosks inside the store entrance wherein you can pre-order your deli items and 15 minutes later, they will be waiting for you at the deli counter.

This is a savvy solution to the mind-numbing purgatory you suffer while standing there, stuck waiting for that one lady to decide between the Boar’s Head or Premium Select. Or that nag who needs a quarter pound of something on the dot. Or that other pest who wants to sample all the bean salads while 87 people wait their turn.

That’s the only drawback: no digital samples. But we’ll live (until Flora figures that one out, too).
