That’s two times now. Some of you may remember that we went into Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse for a couple Happy Hour burgers a while back and were really surprised by something outta left field. They had just launched their “5 For $6 ’Til 7” bar menu, featuring 5 apps, 5 cocktails, and 5 wines—each $6 until 7pm. Someone from Fleming’s wouldn’t stop harping about this veggie burger that comes as simply one gargantuan portobello mushroom cap with sautéed spinach and goat cheese. It sounded boring and a total waste of calories. Then it turned out to be the best thing we had that night. Surprise!
So last week we went in to try the new Cobb Salads. These $28 masterpieces come with either Maine lobster and tarragon ranch or sliced filet mignon with red onion balsamic. In both cases, you get chopped romaine, bleu cheese crumbles, crispy bacon, tomatoes, avocadoes, white mushrooms, and asparagus – all mixed tableside and served as a full meal portion. But to accompany, we ordered Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes which come with roasted red pepper and lime butter sauce.
The crab cakes, for whatever reason, weren’t swimming in perfection, like things that come out of any Fleming’s kitchen usually are. We couldn’t put our finger on it, but they were just eh (yep, just used eh as an adjective). Our server picked up on our lack of enthusiasm and offered to send something else out. We put the onus on her and the chef to pick something. What came out was incredible, an A++ appetizer that’s not only reason to return to Fleming’s, but something we would have never ever ordered: lettuce wraps filled with lump crab and served Louis-style. We could’ve eaten platter after platter of these clean, refreshing beauties.
Easy-to-wrap butter lettuce provides the conveyance for chopped avocado, tomato, hard-boiled egg, bacon bits, and jumbo lump crabmeat. The deal sealer? House-made Thousand Island dressing. Seriously, these healthy (or so we tell ourselves) appetizers will no doubt weave their way into every one of our meals at Fleming’s from now on. They were perfect.
Or you could just get a cobb salad with a giant portion of lobster and all the tasty accouterment and be happy with that. Or both the wraps and the salad. Or just a steak. Or … Damn. Damn you Fleming’s and your perfect menu. Maybe we’ll just leave it up to the server again. Although the salads and wraps are available at all Flemingses, we went to this one:
