CAN YOU DIG IT?
The Dish
Sure, Jamie Oliver had the right idea, what with his Food Revolution and all. But what if he didn’t need to show kids what ground up chicken bones looked like after all? Maybe he just needed to pick up a shovel…
That’s what the folks at Slow Food Phoenix are doing this Saturday with their “Dig In!” From 8am to noon at Hidden Hills Elementary (1919 E. Sharon Dr.). They’re breaking ground with kids and families to teach them about where food should come from (the Earth, for those that don’t know). Kids will plant stuff that’ll pop back up for the fall and winter harvests and learn all kinds of nuggets about the importance of planting and eating from organic, local farms and in some cases, even your own backyard.
After breaking ground, the group will break bread for lunch. If you’re a parent and plan on bringing your little farmers, you can chat with Slow Food reps about the upcoming Child Nutrition Act, a House Bill that will improve the quality of school lunches and teach kids everywhere to speak with Jamie’s annoying but simultaneously charming English accent.
