NIKKI COMES OUT

The Dish

Jul

2010

Earlier this week, local restaurant critic Nikki Buchanan spoke to Valley PR Blog for their column, “Pitch Me.” In it, she sent a message to PR people about how, exactly she wants to be pitched. Uninterestingly enough, she wants to be pitched exactly the same way every editor/writer-with-a-beat wants to be pitched – intelligently. The fact that it’s 2010 and writers are still telling PR people to read their work first is astonishing to us.

But what’s also astonishing is that Nikki Buchanan just resigned from her post at the AZ Republic, with a last day set for August 4. She had been the longtime food critic at Phoenix Magazine and got fired after a debacle you can read about here. Then she started a blog called The Wild Lavender which had potential but was immediately left out to pasture the moment she landed her Republic gig, reviewing East Valley restaurants.

Why did Buchanan resign? Well, we coulda just placed a call, but we thought it would be more fun to guess. Here are five possible career moves:

1. Although some have complained that Nikki was always a little loose with those stars, she has attracted the attention of such celestial organizations as NASA. She will now consult on their in-shuttle dining menu.

2. Cirque du Soleil has realized the power of food, and hired her to bridge the world of trapeze and cooking with their new production, “High Wire Cuisine.”

3. She’s going to relaunch her blog, “The Wild Lavender” and sex it up for food-porn-obsessed-foodie-types, renaming it “Lavender Gone Wild!”

4. She’s going to write a Republican cookbook with her father, Pat Buchanan. Together, they will explore the link between Mexican food and Republican culture, featuring dishes like Palin’s Posole, Reagan’s Rellenos, Nixon’s Nachos.

5. She’s drank this guys’ Kool-Aid and will help him with whatever life-changing news he is supposedly on the verge of revealing to THE WORLD! No, really. These two are best buds and they’re probably going to join forces, renaming Ty Largo’s company from “Rivers and Leaves” to “Rivers and Lavender.”
