ORGANIC LIMES WITHIN REACH
The Dish
You can imagine how the guy who works at Gucci has a smidge of disdain for his customers—he’s stuck promoting a cocky lifestyle that he can barely claim for himself at $20/hour. Same must be true for the folks who stock your shelves at Whole Foods. They’re there, making sure your glorious Certified Organic Portobello Mushroom Caps are stacked neatly in a wooden display box, while they’re hoping Del Monte goes on sale back at the Bashas’.
The seemingly ever-controversial CEO of Whole Foods, John Mackey, has developed a program that puts organic within the reach of the people who handle it—Whole Foods employees. The company is rolling out a Team Member Healthy Discount Incentive Program, whereby an employee’s body mass index (BMI), cholesterol, and blood pressure lead to greater discounts within the store. The discounts can top 30% which would lower the price of Terra Chips down to Doritos levels!
The program has been met with immediate push-back from blogs, raising the question of people with pre-existing conditions and how that would affect their ability to achieve a 30% discount. We’ll most likely be watching this debate on out Twitter account, but think this program is a ground-breaker, a very real and achievable way that puts healthy living within reach of hardworking employees.
