WAIT WATCHERS
Just Because
EATERAZ MOMENT—Tuesday, 9:15am, in the hood and looking for breakfast. The idea hits us that it’s been ages since we’ve been to Matt’s Big Breakfast because that weekend wait has spun into the Bianco-sphere. It’s a weekday, so we’re thinking, how bad can it be? Sho’nuff, it tops an hour.
Two things here: Number one—Who are these people who wait an hour for eggs? God bless Matt’s owner, Matt Pool, because nobody deserves a line out the door more than that guy. But looking around, a thought occurred to us—this is the most pretentious bullshit this side of the I-10. Central Phoenix people make fun of Scottsdale people for their follow-thy-neighbor mentality. We wonder how many people are doing this wait because someone told them they’ve gotta do the wait and how many just cannot fathom eating eggs from anyone else other than Matt Pool.
Number two—although we headed to LGO for a Commuter, the best idea came 2 hours 2 late: Gallo Blanco Café in The Clarendon Hotel. Not only is it practically down the block from Matt’s, but did you know this pitch perfect restaurant serves breakfast ALL DAMN DAY?! Think $6 Huevos Rancheros, $5 eggs and chorizo with refried beans and tortillas, and even smothery crepes for $5. Plus, we coulda got the inside scoop from chef/owner Doug Robson about the progress of his renovation of a former Coffee Plantation at 48th Street and Warner into a market/restaurant. Name TBD.
So for next time, earmark:
Gallo Blanco Cafe
401 W. Clarendon Ave.
Phoenix, AZ 85013
602-274-4774
www.galloblancocafe.com
And pick some stuff up to-go for the people outside Matt’s. They’re probably passing out from starvation.

Yeah, this place is rather comical! Breakfast here is pretty good, but the process of obtaining such eats is a huge pain in the ass. How about building this space out and or building an additional breakfast spot downtown, obviously the demand is substantial. I can’t help but come to the conclusion, that creating these lines, feeds a very BIG ego…
Genius.
Yea. Ego doesn’t even begin to describe Mr. Pool.
Gallo Blanco is doing it right. There’s almost never a wait (for now, fingers crossed for us locals) but its not because the food’s not spectacular. Its delicious!
I’m not a breakfast person, so the wait for Matt’s BB just adds agony to apathy. The food is good, I’l give Matt that. But I can cook a perfectly great waffle at home, why am I waiting for one again? This is a great destination for tourists who want a taste of locally-sourced ingredients, but for us locals its becoming easier and easier every day to get the same or similar-quality goods as the uh… Big Boys.
I gladly go to Gallo Blanco when it means I’ll be served promptly — breakfast, lunch or dinner.
amirighton 03: have you ever MET Matt Pool? If so, you really couldn’t so comfortably dish out a comment about him having a big ego. He is seriously one really, really nice guy and has a really, really nice family. Come on now! The food is just good and frankly, if people want to wait, what does it matter to anyone else. It can be a bummer if you’re pressed for time, sure, but it’s his business and he gets to keep it small if that’s what he wants, but let’s not go guessing that that’s just to feed an ego. Them’s silly conclusions to be jumpin’ to. There are plenty of other places to eat around town that have waits and are large establishments.
