Unless you’re a member of Las Polamas, who had a luncheon there yesterday, or one of the Fox A-Team, then you haven’t eaten at Modern Steak yet. Well neither have we for that matter, but we did get a guided tour by the sly one himself. So until we can report on the food, we can at least give you a first look at this mesmerizing, Vegas-sized, steakhouse.
Modern Steak is certainly living up to its name in both decor and menu. “I didn’t want to build just another traditional steakhouse with dark woods and guys smoking cigars, I wanted to design something that women would actually like,” says Fox. Well by the looks of both, he most surely has another smash on his hands.
Working with Cathy Hayes, who also just recently completed Revo Burrito for Lenny Rosenberg, Fox deftly combines subtle details to a warm a very mall-ish space. Even their “indoor” patio is inviting with great colorful print cushions on solid iron-framed seating. Custom chrome lamps form Spain, banisters composed of Lucite, and, oh, that building facade. Fox tells us that they laser cut the steel based on a pattern of leaves that they randomly tossed on the ground. The shadows they throw off on the building is striking.
But let’s not forget the menu. Again, Fox was going for something more “fun”, which is immediately evident with their Foot Long Kobe Beef Hot Dog with “all the fixin’s.” Executive Chef, Andrew Ashmore (see our post) is manning the kitchen after many months of re-imagining, tweaking, and re-imagining again, steakhouse dishes.
All the usual suspects are on the menu as far as steakhouses go, which is a good thing, but they also throw in items like a Loup De Mare, and a Crispy Skinned Jidori Chicken, not as whimsical as the Baked Potato “Bar” where you are giving all the classic sides, but certainly flexing their more inspired muscles. The meats are divided into two edifying sections — Midwest Prime Beef and All-Natural American Raised Beef. The latter featuring cuts like a Meyer All-Natural 12oz NY Strip, a Snake River Wagyu 8oz Filet, and a Heart Brand Akaushi 10oz Rib Eye. Prices for these babies are only for adults with the Rib Eye ringing in at a hearty $70.
Modern Steak’s outdoor patio will be a draw, as will the PDR (Private Dining Room) which is media-friendly for all you corporate planners.
And what Modern Steak restaurant would be complete with a Modern Burger adjunct?
Situated outside the restaurant facing the interior of the mall is a small counter service burger-bar inspired by Roy Liebenthal’s “Pop Burger” in New York. We did in fact get to eat there and can proudly say we were in the first three customers.
Snagging Margaret Merritt from The Agency Arizona, who was in between fashion shows for the mall’s new wing opening and the Barneys festivities, we sat right down at the counter and promptly devoured two perfectly cooked and tasty sliders, with the requisite side of fries. They also have a great chopped salad and a selection of different ice cream sandwiches.
Starting on the 26th they will be open for Lunch bet 11am-3pm, a Mid-Day service from 3pm-5pm and Dinner starting at 5pm. They are located on the east end of the Scottsdale Fashion Square facing Camelback Rd.
