Tapino Kitchen & Wine Bar has always embraced out-of-the-box dining ideas, from pairing food with paintings or serving dinner on a local farm. Now, Chef James Porter is thinking “inside the box” with a Boxed Wine Pairing Dinner on Thursday, May 14 at 6:30 p.m. The evening begins with a reception of Francis Ford Coppola’s Sofia sparkling wine straight outta the box, then guests are seated for the four-course affair. Course number three (our favorite) pairs a wood oven-roasted NY steak in cabernet butter with pomme frittes, with a 2006 Four Cabernet Sauvignon from Healdsburg, CA. And just like the box wines themselves, this meal is a bargain at $49 per person. Reservations are required at 480.991.6887.

We ran into Chef Porter this weekend and he told us: “The liquor reps were looking at me like I was nuts when I told them I wanted boxed wines. When I was trying some of ‘em, I swear, a couple were vintage Bordeaux. Wouldn’t that be hilarious? Bordeaux in a box.”
