If you’ve been to Bourbon Steak, Michael Mina’s new joint at the Fairmont Scottsdale Resort, then you already know this: In lieu of bread at your table, everyone gets a trio of duck-fat fried French fries. One is herb-dusted served with onion ketchup; another has a hint of truffle and served with a truffle aioli; and the third is a finger-messing-good paprika covered fry served with housemade barbeque sauce. So if a $190 A5 is out of your budget, just grab a $37 skirt steak, the free fries, and a glass of wine. You’ll get out for about $50!

Well he’s at it again. “The Fox” has bought the lease to Taneko, which yesterday, EATERAZ reported finito. In its place, Fox plans a…wait for it….Mexican restaurant of a surely trendy status.

Blanco Tacos + Tequila is the name, and selling guac is his game. Already with a location in Tucson, Fox’s website says “Blanco Tacos + Tequila offers modern Mexican fare in a casual-chic setting with updated classics.”

Well, we can always use some more good Mexican food out here.

Hey Sam, how about you solve the BBQ crisis too!

“We would like to thank all of our friends and loyal guests for the support you have shown Taneko and our team over the last year and half. It has been our pleasure to share with you our vision of izakaya style dining and our Japanese inspired cuisine. We are grateful that our food, ambience and service resonated with so many and are humbled to have been honored with numerous accolades including Best New Restaurant from Phoenix Magazine. In spite of our successes, it is with a heavy heart that we announce we have closed Taneko as of July 20th.”

So there it is. The restaurant The Borgata killed. Sure we felt dwarfed inside the space. Sure the kitchen didn’t serve anything we couldn’t get somewhere else (and just as good). But damnit, they were open late, had a great sake list, and the management folk were nice enough. In a strange way, we will mourn this loss. And in a severe way, we will hate to watch as Westcor sits on that empty Scottsdale Road-facing building for what will probably be at least two years. Goodbye Taneko. You were in the wrong the place at the wrong time.

Had an appointment in Old Town this morning and thought I’d stop by Food Bar to check out the morning scene, grab a muffin and a coffee. Apparently, reality struck the people behind this schizophrenic restaurant because it’s closed for a remodel. Has it even been open for a year?! I could have told you the flow was bad, the menu was totally unclear, and the service was awkward.

Anyway, the only thing open today was a little side window serving coffee and they were out of half the items on their chalkboard menu. I’m sad, not angry, about all of this because Cathy Hayes designed Food Bar, and I find her to be one of the most talented designers in this town. If they screw with her materials palette, I swear, then, well, I’ll probably still go, but I just won’t be happy about it.

On Sunday nights, both Phoenix Morton’s locations are offering a massive Prime Sirloin Burger for $19.78 through September, priced in honor of the year the chain fired up the grills. We haven’t tried it yet, but if it’s anything like the Bar Bites Sliders they serve during happy hour, then we’re in for a treat. That trio of Prime Sirlion sliders, by the way, is only $5 every weekday from 5-6:30 and 9-10:30, along with other $5 bar items, including steak sliders, and chicken strips.

We love Morton’s not just cuz, well, it’s Morton’s, but $5 of each burger purchase will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Didn’t take very long for this one to go down. Referencing the slipping economy and high rents, perhaps they would have stayed open if — wait for it — it was uh, good! The food by and large was just ok, but the place never really felt like an appetizing market. Surrounded by an in-your-face staff and antiseptic presentations, the pricey food did not provide good value. We all know that “Scottsdalians,” yes, I just said that, Scottsdalians, are not afraid to spend money on their groceries as AJ’s and Whole Foods will certainly stand as examples, so DISH, as we say at EATERAZ, “Stick a fork in it.”

2008

2008 James Beard Award winners were in announced in June and Arizona shoots a blank. As much as we feel that we have a burgeoning food scene here, apparently the rest of the world hasn’t gotten with the program.
